Railway projects for civil engineering students

This article lists a series of railway projects intended as a response to civil engineering students’ inquiries about topics for their final degree projects.

Projects in civil engineering, regardless of their specialty, require a comprehensive approach involving many disciplines and must always be conceived with a keen eye on sustainability.

Railway infrastructure is part of a country’s Critical Infrastructure; railway projects represent a high-impact challenge in the efficient use of national resources, and their proposal has a positive effect on society, which finds a solution for its mobility, and on companies, which find a more efficient alternative for transporting their cargo.

From FerroTRACK, we strongly encourage all interested parties who wish to contribute to enriching the railway system.

Track gauge measuring ruler control device. IT03

Track gauge and cant measuring device are elements for in situ measurement that are moved from the laboratory to the construction site, often together with track tools, along steep roads and are used in conditions other than those of a laboratory. This means that the original certification of the device requires frequent monitoring to remain effective. Likewise, that certification in accredited laboratories can be somewhat difficult due to time, travel and the availability of institutions that carry out this work.

Fastener/sleeper electrical impedance test – IT01

The electrical resistance of the sleeper-fastening system in a wet Railway Track is a very important parameter to consider. This is because the rails are electric conductors in the circuit of signalling and traction and, an inappropriate electric resistance may be the cause of many trouble and malfunction. In this first part, it will be studied the origin of the requirement, the conditions in the track and the standard allowable. A second part will cover the test.
